Gary joined the U.S. Army in 1968. He served as part of the Army Security Agency in Berlin, Germany. He was stationed also at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts, Ft. Hood, Texas, and Torii Station, Okinawa Japan. After serving his country, Gary settled in Killeen, Texas and worked for the company that manufacturers Hefty products. He retired in 2011. One of his passions was spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. He was a collector of many different items such as baseball cards, stamps, and coins. He especially enjoyed meeting with the Tuesday morning prayer group of First Methodist Church in Killeen and fellowshipping with the group of Old Spooks and Spies.
Left to cherish the memories of Gary are his wife, Viretta (Penny) Gillespie; Children, Jeremiah Neil Gillespie and former wife, Sandra Gillespie with 3 Granddaughters; Chandler Sheppard; Jackie Wofford; Jessica Goss and Great Grandsons, Conner, Carter, Beau, and Jordan; Siblings, Gail Russell and 3 children; Greg Gillespie and 1 child; Gaye Pickens and 2 children and Gwen Barker and 2 children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Georgie Gillespie.
A a celebration of life service for Gary will be held Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 2:00 PM at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.
