Don was born March 21, 1931 in Pierz, Minnesota to Caroline and Christin Morrill. In his younger years the love for hunting, fishing and sports was developed. He played football and baseball in high school and boxed with the Golden Gloves. He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Schmitt on October 1, 1951.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary and grandson David Pole.
After 24 years in the U.S. Army he retired and earned his broad casting degree. He was the morning voice at CTC 91.3 for 13 years and worked on weekend Big Band Music. While in service he earned the Bronze Star Medal and Commendation Medal while serving 2 tours in Vietnam. While stationed in Germany he managed the Rod & Gun Club and was a deer guide on Fort Hood for many years. After retired from CTC he volunteered with K-Cops with the Killeen Police Department, Pershing Park School and Marshall’s Dept. His passion was his family, friends and his love of hunting, fishing, and sports. (Texas Rangers, UT and Dallas Cowboys) He was a lifetime member of Duck Unlimited and the DAV. He was also a member of the VFW.
He is survived by his son Michael Morrill, of Copperas Cove, daughter Patricia Pole, of Temple, granddaughters Michelle Hanke and husband Jason of Belton, Katie Fontenot of San Marcos, Heather Marek of Temple and Courtney Morrill of Copperas Cove. He was a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church on Fort Hood.
Funeral services will be at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen on Thursday at 10:30am. Inurnment will follow with full military honors at 12 noon at Central Texas Stave Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6-8pm Wednesday at the funeral home with a rosary at 7pm.
