Peter McIntyre March 2, 1943 – October 17, 2020
It is with profound sadness that we announce Dad’s passing after a 60 year fight with Multiple Sclerosis.
Left to honor his memory after 50 years of marriage, his beloved Janet. His daughters Tracy (Shelden) and Erin (Chris). He will be forever missed by his Grandchildren whom without, he would not have been able to live at home until the very end. Morgan (Taylor), Bryson, Logan, Caden, Phoenix and Tyler. He had a very special place in his heart for his nieces Susan, Nancy and Lisa as well as all of the Casson/McIntyre Children. He will also be missed by his brothers in law Greg (Madelon), Brian (Suzanne) and Mark (Lisa) Penner along with their families. He had a very long list of friends whom were loyal visitors and correspondents that we are so very thankful took the time as he really appreciated it.
Born in Winnipeg, Dad grew up in River Heights on Ash Street and attended Kelvin high school where he made many lifelong friends, some to whom he was still close. He started his career in Insurance as an independent adjuster with PJ Scott, and later for Autopac as a road adjuster. He also sold cars for Southdale for a short period of time.
Dad’s heart was always on Beach road in Keewatin. He spent all his summers and weekends at the cottage. In 1977 Dad decided the drive every week was enough, and moved his family to Keewatin. He opened Kenora Rent-All and the Pop Shoppe to provide for his family. Many fond memories were had waiting for the latest flavor of Pop to arrive with the weekly shipment. In 1986 Dad missed Insurance enough to open Lake of the Woods Insurance. In 2001 his health forced him to retire early. His legacy is still operated today as Gillons Insurance by his daughter Tracy. His photo still sits proudly in the entrance when you enter the office in Kenora. It will always have a place on the front counter.
Dad had a love for wood boats. His first wooden boat was the Foo Foo, but his prized possession was the “Janet E” a 22 foot wooden Shepherd. Although Dad was obsessed with this boat, we the family had a love / hate relationship with it. I am sure the Grubmayr’s and the Casson families have many memories of swimming for driveshafts, resurrecting a sunken boat, putting out engine fires and varnishing, oh the varnishing. Later in life imagine how happy he was when Tracy married Shelden the autobody man (who Dad was certain could restore old wood boats as well). As his health declined the work was too much and he was forced to sell it. Every year we would take him to the Harbourfront in Kenora by Pontoon boat to watch the wood boat parade. A tradition that we would plan our weekend around. We will continue that tradition for many years to come. Every year he hoped to see the “Janet E” as part of the parade. He later purchased a pontoon boat that he enjoyed almost as much as the “Janet E”. In more recent years, you would find him just sitting at the helm of the boat playing with the GPS or the radio for hours.
Papa also had a love for old cars. He owned many many different vehicles and was known by the people of Keewatin as the guy from Winnipeg with the cool cars. When Papa and Grandma were married, he owned a 1970 Stingray Corvette. Its funny they were married as long as they were. On the first day of their honeymoon, mom rolled Papa’s prized possession in Bertha Minnesota on their way to San Antonio Texas.
Two years ago, thanks to Erin and Chris, we were able as a family to take Dad to Disney World, where 12 of us invaded a Condo at the Animal Kingdom. This was something Dad wanted to do for many years.
This trip was a memory for all of us that we will never forget. It was very difficult for the 12 of us to be together as Erin and her family reside in Southern Ontario.
How ironic is it that you chose this date to Pass. Today is the 9th anniversary of the Winnipeg Jets first win since returning to Winnipeg. In 9 years you didn’t miss a Winnipeg Jets game. The boys joked that you would sooner watch the Jets play than watching Bryson’s game, or the boys race. Bryson joked that he should call “Buff” when he needed help transferring to his wheelchair from now on.
The cats will now have no where to sleep. They will miss you.
He was the last remaining member of the WK McIntyre family. Predeceased by his parents Frieda and William Kenneth, his brother William Kenneth Jr, and sister Mary Grubmayr. He was also predeceased by his in laws Peter & Audrey Penner.
It’s Okay to Go
You were sick and tired and we all knew
that God would soon come to take you.
You fought so hard, so very long,
but through the pain, you stayed strong.
We all knew there would come a day
when God would come to carry you away.
It doesn't make it easier to say goodbye,
and I try so hard not to cry.
I can't help but feel defeated,
or even maybe a little cheated.
But how very selfish would I be
to hope and pray you could stay with me.
So as you laid there, tubes running to and fro,
I had to tell you, "It's okay to go."
Say "hi" to loved ones waiting on the other side.
I know some day you'll be there when I take that ride.

We would like to thank the staff on 3rd East, especially Char for her compassion during these final days. To our family, friends and, neighbors whose out pouring of support has been overwhelming, thank you. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to St. Andrews United Church “Memory Garden Fund” Box 608 Keewatin ON P0X 1C0. Due to Covid a private family service will be held by invitation only. Later when the pandemic allows, we will hold a celebration of life. Dad always loved a good gathering with all of his friends and would want everyone to be in attendance.
Until we meet again.
