Gerald Carlson
It is with our deepest regrets that the family announces the passing of Gerald Edwin Carlson at Lake of the Woods Hospital on September 28, 2015.
Born April 23, 1921 in Kenora, Ontario to Ture and Florence Carlson, Gerald was 1 of 3 children.
He was predeceased by his parents Ture and Florence, brother Doug, daughter in law Debbie and grandson Brian Dean. He spent his entire life in Kenora, working on the family farm until enlisting in the Army in 1941, with extended service in Europe and Scotland, where he met the love of his life Margaret prior to returning to Canada in 1945.
Dad was the President of the Evergreen Community Club through the 1950's and began his lifetime of coaching and managing youth hockey and baseball programs through the 50's and 60's. He then went on to assist in coaching and managing the Kenora Thistles. His love for hockey pushed him to attend
high level training sessions with the likes of Father Bower in an attempt to reach a higher standard of athletic training, coaching and management. He later wrote a sports column for the Miner News, covering minor league baseball, hockey and the Kenora Thistles.
Dad was secretary-treasurer of the Moose Lodge at its founding in Kenora in the mid 1950's and held that position for many years.
He was employed at the Kenora Pulp & Paper Mill and retired in 1996 with 46 years of accident free service.
Dad will be greatly missed by his wife Margaret, sons Brian (Anna), Bradley (Linda) and Gerald, sister Helen, many grand and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, sister in law Edie and Brother and sister in law, Jim and Jean Dickson, and special extended family Betty and Merle Nyberg.
The family would like to extend many thanks to the staff, management and medical staff at Birchwood Terrace for their care and compassion during this time.
Cremation has taken place and Funeral Services will take place at Brown Funeral Home on October 9, 2015, at 2.00 pm in the afternoon, with Pastor Germaine Lovelace officiating.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Birchwood Terrace, Kenora, Ontario or a charity of their choice.
