Ella Peterson
It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden, unexpected passing of Ella Peterson on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
She is predeceased by her parents, Robert and Tiofila Peters.
She will be sadly missed by her husband of 52 years, Duane, her children, Lori Ukrainec (Ernie) and Colin Peterson (Brenda), grandchildren, Karen Drake (Ryan), April Wetelainen (Dimitri), Meaghan Peterson, Jenna Peterson and Sharla Peterson, great-grandchildren, Kolby and Karter, sisters Erna Selman, Elizabeth Hinrich, Hilda Laverdure, Freda Flewelling, brother Ernie Peters (Shirley), mother-in-law Gerda Peterson, brother-in-law Ross Peterson (Carol) and by her many nieces and nephews.
Ella was born on June 28, 1935 in Gameland, Ontario. After completing teacher’s college, she began her teaching career in Rainy River, Ontario. On July 4, 1958, she married Duane in Rainy River. Ella and Duane lived in numerous towns and cities throughout northern Ontario, as they often relocated on account of Duane’s career with the OPP. She retired from her teaching career in 1979 when she accepted a position with the Ministry of Transportation – Licensing Division, where she worked until her official retirement.
Ella was an active, accomplished and ambitious person. She was admired for numerous qualities, including her positive outlook, organizational skills, and get-it-done attitude.
As an avid golfer and a member of the Kenora Golf and Country Club, Ella often golfed 5 times per week or more. She was such a devoted golfer that she chose her condo based on the fact that the living room window overlooked the 14th tee of the Club’s golf course. She also enjoyed participating in out-of-town tournaments.
During Duane’s second career as a fishing guide, Ella became known for her famous shore lunches, leading many to attribute Duane’s success as a fishing guide to Ella’s cooking.
She enjoyed travelling not only for golf tournaments but also to attend figure skating competitions and to try her luck at various casinos.
Ella was a dedicated member of the Good Shephard Lutheran Church; her volunteerism and participation on various committees was greatly appreciated.
