Peacefully, after battling Parkinson's Disease for many years, Dan Bouvier passed away at Pinecrest Home on February 13, 2022 at the age of 87 years.
Dan is survived by his wife, Gayle, of 52 years; sons David, Ted and Peter, and daughter, Suzanne (Marc): grandchildren Morgan, Gabriel, Elyse, Graham and Tybias; siblings Diane Puchalski, Paul (Debbie), Maurice, and Mariette Upton, brother-in-law Robert MacDonald, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dan was predeceased by his parents Annette and Armand Bouvier, and his brother, Robert (Bob) Bouvier.
Dan, was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan in 1935, moved with his family to Ontario, finally settling in Nipigon. As a youth in Nipigon, Dan was involved in his Dad's business as a mechanic and tow truck driver. He also started playing hockey, usually goalie, which he enjoyed into his late fifties.
Dan ultimately became a teacher, eventually moving to Sioux narrows in 1965, where he met and subsequently, married his wife, Gayle in 1969. After transferring to St. Thomas Aquinas school in the 70's, Dan taught the Industrial Arts programme until retiring in 1989. In 1981, we purchased, and still operate the Northern Lights and Boutique Soleil in Sioux narrows.
Over the years, Dan has been on many local boards, associations and clubs: the volunteer fire department, the volunteer ambulance department, Chamber of Commerce, Curling Club, Ham Radio Society, and took his turn chairing many. Dan was elected to, and served many years on the Town Council of Sioux Narrows.
That tells you many things Dan did, but what about the person Dan was?
Dan was quiet and self contained, but noticed everything. He was full of humour and likely the inventor of the "Dad joke". He was loyal to causes he took as his own, and didn't suffer fools gladly. If you asked his opinion, you'd better be prepared to hear the truth.
Dan loved the outdoors, and loved to hunt and fish with this neighbor, Bill Franchuk, and his friends from Sioux Narrows and Thomas Aquinas school. And any celebration worth its salt, had to be commemorated with one of Dan's legendary pig roasts!
Dan loved woodworking and building stuff. He spent many hours in his workshop designing and constructing projects from a tiny birdhouse or bat house to an addition of a sunroom and deck on our own house.
Dan will be sorely missed, not only by his family, but by the many students who kept in touch over the years, friends who shared the many aspects of his life, and the many customers and acquaintances who looked forward to trading stories every summer at the store.
A special thanks to all the staff at Pinecrest who, for the past four years, helped make Dan's life as comfortable and respected as possible during the late stages of Parkinson's. It helped ease his journey.
There will be no service for Dan, per his wishes. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Parkinson's Society or heart and Stroke would be appreciated.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.brownfuneralhomekenora.com for the Bouvier family.
