Blaine Johnston
On March 12, 2017 after a courageous battle following a stroke, Blaine peacefully passed away with his family by his side. He was 79 and had been a resident of Pinecrest since December 2016.
Besides his wife Kath (nee Jordan), he is survived by his daughter Shannon (Bernie) and granddaughters Mikayla & Shalene of Kanata (Ottawa), Ontario.
Blaine will also be dearly missed by his sister Judy (Vic) Lund and their family, nephew Brad (Bradey, Seth, Caleb, Jacob and Ben) of Laclu, by his brother Gary (Lil) of Regina, Saskatchewan, niece Jana Loewans of Neepawa, Manitoba and his uncle Don (Eileen) Sutherland of Keewatin.
Kathy’s family will also fondly remember him, brother Bill (Marion), Jordan, Kenora, Ontario and their family, niece Kristan Valade (Eric, Jasmine, Heather and Sage) of Ear Falls, nephew Andrew (Courtney) Jordan of Kenora. Kath’s cousin Ruth Anderson was also a close member of the family. He was also survived by many relatives and friends, including Shannon's mother Bev of Kanata, Ontario.
Blaine was predeceased by his parents Myrtle & Alex Johnston, aunts Jeanette Sward and Doris McMahon, special uncle Jack Sutherland, mother-in-law Margaret Jordan and other family members.
Blaine was born March 09, 1938 in Rainy River, but moved with his family to Kenora at a young age where he grew up in Lakeside. He began working at the Paper Mill in 1956 and retired in 1998 after 42 years.
Before and after retirement golf was an integral part of Blaine’s life and he enjoyed the association of the KGCC, the many away trips to Las Vegas, Florida, Virginia and Warroad. Golfing at Kaanipali in Hawaii was a special treat with Kathy.
On retirement he rediscovered his interest in building model ships from gallions to paddle wheels to sailing ships which helped pass the winter months.
When not golfing, Kath’s love of the lake got them out boating to visit relatives and friends or just “cruise.”
Cremation has taken place and as per his wishes, there will be no funeral. There will be a celebration of Blaine’s life in early summer.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cat Shelter, Pinecrest Home or to the Junior Learn to Golf Programme at the KG&CC would be appreciated by the family or a charity of one’s choice.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Daly for his attention to Blaine over the years but in particular to the doctors, nurses and attendants on 2nd Floor East of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital for their exemplary care and respect they showed to Blaine in the nine months he was there. Special thanks go to the staff especially, Michael, Heather and Jan in Unit 2 at Pinecrest for their attention to Blaine’s needs for the past 2.5 months.
Kathy also wishes to thank the Saturday morning coffee group for including Blaine for as long as he was able to attend.
Blaine was a quiet, kind and gentle soul and he will be missed very much.
