He was preceded in death by his spouse of 58 years, Gerre Koger; parents Virn and Odna Koger; and brothers Ralph and Robert Koger. He is survived by his son, Aaron (Dorothy) Koger; grandsons Jackson, Joaquin, and Wilson; granddaughters Madison and Alicia; sisters Pamela (Steve) Overman and Patrice (Donnie) Simpson; nephews Jay, Anthony, Brian, and Christopher; nieces Denise, Richelle, Nicole, Kelly, and Jana.
Ron earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Pittsburg State University, a Master of Education in Educational Psychology and Guidance and a Doctor of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Kansas, and postgraduate work in Counselor Education/Student Personnel from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. While Ron began his career as a math teacher, he became a university administrator, working at Pittsburg State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Indiana State University, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Southern Polytechnic State University, and Kennesaw State University. Ron was a leader in the field of college admissions, becoming the president of the National Association of College Admission Counseling. His successful career was guided by a student-first philosophy, which led to a legacy of transforming the lives of countless students. Known for mentoring and coaching staff, his former employees have flourished due to his leadership. The pinnacle of Ron’s career occurred when he was asked to be the interim president of Southern Polytechnic.
Ron was known for his philanthropy and work in the community. He and his late wife, Gerre, established the Ron and Gerre Koger Scholarship at Kennesaw State, and he was supportive of his alma maters. Additionally, he served on non-profit boards, was active in his HOA, and was a frequent blood and platelet donor with the American Red Cross.
A visitation will take place at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home (2950 Cobb Pkwy NW, Kennesaw, Georgia) on Saturday, January 9, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Additionally, a Celebration of Life will be scheduled later in 2021, when it is safe to do so. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Ron & Gerre Koger Scholarship (see link below).
