As the first child of the late Roy E. and Jewel Hilderbrand Scroggs, Rachel was born , was raised and lived her entire life in Kennesaw. She was sister to Milton, Jimmy, Billy and Janey (Pat), all deceased, and is survived by her devoted husband and best friend of 66 years, Lamar; doting mother of three sons, Steve (Brenda), Mickey (Amy), and David (Diane); nurturing grandmother to six adoring grandchildren, Cory (Jennifer), Chris (Matt Geren), Shannon Miller (Doug Dickens), Allison (Justin) Turney, Chase and Anna. Seven great grandchildren also survive. Sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law include, Frances Scroggs, Ruth Fincher, Harold and Barbara Shelton, Joel and Linda Shelton, Ronnie and Linda Shelton and Elsie Shelton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A life-long member of Kennesaw United Methodist Church, She served during her contributory years as chair of the worship committee, church wedding coordinator, chancel choir member, and VBS teacher. Hers was a rich and faith-based heritage, stemming from her great-grandmother who was a charter member of the church. She was a constant example that God is good “all the time”. Quiet and reserved, mostly private, hard worker and humble to a fault, hers was a true servant’s heart. Fiercely protective of her family and loved ones, she inherited her grandmother’s spirit of always doing what is right and making it clear that no one was to ever “mess with my family”. Nana Rach was always the final word. She will always be remembered as the ultimate potato salad maker, banana pudding maker, pound cake baker and apple sauce muffin baker. Until her poor health in recent years precluded it, family enjoyed every Sunday lunch at Nana’s and Granddad’s. She was all about family, she loved spoiling us and her positive example of righteousness is a lifelong gift. “I lay down and slept; I awoke in safety for the Lord was watching over me.” Psalm 3:5.
