Norman Terry McKinney, 74, of Marietta, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2011. Funeral service will be held Thursday, September 15 at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw with Rev. Robert Ledbetter officiating beginning at 11 am. Burial will follow at Pine Ridge Memorial Park in Kennesaw.
Born July 3, 1937 in Pocahontas, Virginia the son of William O. and Louise Crist McKinney, Norm was preceded in death by his wife, and the love of his life, Elaine Kestner McKinney in 1991. He is survived by his daughter Kay and son in law Dusty McDaniel; His grandson Bobby McDaniel, granddaughter Stephanie McDaniel and great grandson Mason McDaniel all of Cherokee County; Brother Ronald J. McKinney and sister in law Phyllis of Deltona, Florida; Nephew Mike McKinney of Melbourne, FL and niece Rhonda Glader of Deland, FL.
Norm spent most of his career in the telephone business beginning with GTE in Bluefield, WVA and ending after nine years in Perry, GA where he was Perry District Manager. Norm then spent 17 years with Contel starting in Amherst, VA and by accepting promotions that would take Norm, Elaine and Kay on quite an adventure. They went from Amherst, VA to Asheville, NC and then to Corydon, IN where Norm was President and State Manager of Contel of Indiana. They returned to Georgia in 1971 locating in Glennville where he was President and State Manager of Contel of Georgia. They moved to Marietta in 1974 where he became Vice President of Public Affairs for the Gulf Division of Contel. He joined Siemens in 1988 in their Sales Group where he remained until his retirement in 2005.
A three sport athlete in school, Norm was involved in some organized sport throughout his life whether it was bowling leagues, softball leagues, competitive water skiing or golf, which was his passion for the last 40 years.
The family will be receiving friends Wednesday, September 14 from 5-8pm at the Funeral Home.
