John Maurice Gibbons, age 89, of Kennesaw, Georgia passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023. He was born in St. Charles, MO to the late Robert and Getrude Gibbons. John served in the United States Air Force for four years and served his country proudly. He continued his career in the aeronautical field at McDonnell Aircraft Company (St. Louis, MO) and Lockheed Martin (Marietta, GA). He was a volunteer at Kennestone Hosptial with his wife for many years. John was an active member of Kennesaw First Baptist, where he was the member of the choir and traveled with the church groups. He was a train collector and called himself a train hobbyist. John also enjoyed watching his favorite baseball teams, which were the Atlanta Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals. Most of all John loved to spend time with his wife where they enjoyed countless hours of service to their church and community. In more recent years they shared the love of their new hobby; puzzles. John was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be missed by all that knew him.
John is survived by his wife of 17 years, Alitha Gibbons, son; Todd Gibbons (Linda Heck), daughter, Robyn Gibbons, stepdaughters; Lynne Greba (Patrick), and Leanne Torrie (Alec), brothers, Tom Gibbons (Betty), and Jim Gibbons (Sandy), sisters, Dorothy Helvey, and Kathie Hawk, and grandchildren; Rachel, Brandon, Andrew, Ali, Ashleigh, Renee, and Nicole, as well as thirteen great grandchildren.
John is preceded in death by his son; Randall Gibbons, brothers; Robert Gibbons, Kenny Gibbons, Billy Gibbons, his sisters; Sue Barclay, and Mary Thayer.
John’s memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at 10:00am at Kennesaw First Baptist Church, 2958 N Main St, Kennesaw, GA 30144. The family will be having a private graveside at Georgia National Cemetery after the service.
