September 4, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born on July 26, 1952, to Thermon and Lois Pope in Cartersville, Georgia. He was the fourth of six children. He attended Cobb and Cherokee County schools and graduated from Cherokee County High School in 1972. After high school, he went to work for Alexander Seewald, before marrying the love of life, Denise McCollum on September 15, 1973. He also worked for Georgia Department of Revenue in Atlanta, Georgia and Lockheed Georgia in Marietta, Georgia before working for and retiring from the Cobb County School System in 2013.
Weldon accepted Jesus as his savior in his early twenties and went on to serve God for the rest of his life; working in children's ministry for over 40 years at Shiloh Hills Baptist Church in Kennesaw, Georgia before becoming faithfully involved in many ministries at Kennesaw First Baptist Church in Kennesaw, GA; most recently in his position as "Snack Daddy' for Kennesaw First Kids Vacation School Program.
Weldon was loved by many, both family and friends. His love for God, his church and his family were apparent in everything that he did. He will be best remembered through his friendships and the love he shared with his family; especially his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. They were all incredibly special to him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Thermon and Lois Pope and sister, Matilda Diane Wigington.
He is survived by his loving wife Denise, his daughter and son-in-law Rachel and Adam Riggs and his favorite grandchildren, Parker James and Bristol Lynn Riggs. He is also survived by sisters Judy (Ray) Owens and Cindy (Ronny) Chumley, Brothers Bradley (Keena) Pope and Kenneth (Melinda) Pope as well as many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for friends and family to gather will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024 between the hours of 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm. At Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home. A Memorial service to honor James will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Kennesaw First Baptist Church with a visitation starting one hour before. The service will be officiated by his wonderful Godly friend, Pastor Perry Fowler. There will be no graveside service.
