Of Buffalo, New York February 20,2023, Age 94. Beloved husband of the late Mildred (nee Huber) Cohen. Also survived by many dear friends, neighbors and special friend to the McDonnell family. Family and friends may call on Monday February 27, 2023 from 10am- 11am at DENGLER, ROBERTS, PERNA FUNERAL HOME 3070 Delaware Ave. Kenmore, New York 14217, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11am. Larry was an air force veteran, Great Lakes captain with American Steamship and long time University Park resident. Born in Minnesota Larry joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War as communications specialist. Upon honorable discharge he began his life long career serving on Great Lakes freighters. He met his beloved wife, Mildred while they were both vacationing in Miami and moved back to Mildred's home here in Buffalo. Larry was then hired by Williamsville based American Steamship where with Mildred’s encouragement he rose through the ranks to captain one of the largest vessels on the lakes, the American Republic. Larry retired in the mid 80's to enjoy his time with Mildred. When Mildred passed away in 2008 Larry made new friends at the Gloria Parks Community Center, where he became renowned for calling bingo. Larry and Mildred had no children but were beloved by their neighbors on Allenhurst who considered them part of their family. Larry will always be remembered for his big smile, his gentle demeanor and signature phrase "you betcha". In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the SPCA of WNY.
