Gary is survived by his children Sandy, Michelle (Don), and Rob (Sherry) as well as his grandchildren whom he was so proud of: Tara, Samantha, Danielle, and Jeffrey. Further, he is survived by his sister Gail (Jack) and nephews Gordie (Karen), and Daryl.
Gary was predeceased by his parents Milton and Marguerite Harrington and his beloved wife of 60 years, Shari.
Gary was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he lived until he moved with his parents and sister Gail to Watrous, Saskatchewan and then on to Winnipeg. During his senior year of High School, the family then relocated to Dauphin where he met Shari in 1959. They married in 1961, the start of their 60 year journey through life. Having their first child Sandy in Dauphin, they relocated to Morden for a brief stop and their second daughter Michelle, before moving to Treherne, Manitoba where they had their son Rob and spent 23 wonderful years with many friends and close ties to the community. In Treherne, Gary owned and operated the Esso Bulk fuel dealership as well as his Insurance business. Gary and Shari raised their 3 children there and devoted countless hours to the community through his time with Kinsmen and was instrumental in bringing to life both the community pool as well as the Fire Station and first fire truck. Gary was a volunteer Firefighter, Ambulance driver and also served a term as Mayor.
From there, Gary and Shari set off on their next journey to Kelowna, BC where they spent 34 years. In Kelowna, Gary worked for Capri Insurance as well as supporting Shari in her Hallmark store. In Kelowna, they had many close friends and Gary enjoyed boating, hockey, slowpitch, skiing and curling.
As before, Gary gave countless hours to their new community through both the Kinsmen and K40 Clubs of Kelowna as was part of the group that brought the Mission Sports Field to life.
Gary always had a smile and could be counted upon by his family and friends alike to be there to support and help them. Spending time with his grandchildren was very important to him both in Kelowna and on the road to Alberta and Ontario.
Gary was a Life Member of the Kinsmen Service club, an honour for his countless hours of community service.
Gary will be dearly missed by all that knew him for he was a truly wonderful and giving person.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Canadian Cancer Society as he was a Cancer survivor.
