After graduating from Weirdale High School, Don served in the RCAF from 1941-1945 during World War II. After the war, he returned to Saskatchewan where he graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in Agricultural Economics. Don then moved to Montreal, Quebec, where he completed his MA at McGill University in 1950. He took a job with the Department of Fisheries in 1950 in Ottawa, where he met Barbara Baird. They married in 1953. Don retired from the government in 1980 and he and Barbara moved to Penticton, B.C. After Barbara passed away in 1988, Don married Edythe Markstad in Edmonton in 1989. They spent time living in Edmonton and Kelowna. Several weeks each winter were spent in Maui, Hawaii.
In addition to his parents and wives Barbara and Edythe, he was predeceased by his brothers, Niles (Emma Lou), Audry (Ethel), George (Mary), and sisters Edith (Chick Foulds), Helen (Norman Bristowe), Lilian (Norman Egan) and Vera (Ken LeDrew). Also predeceased by his son, Glen (Mark Barton). Survived by daughters Ellen (Michael Paskaluk) and Alice; grandchildren Robyn Shipclark (Conrad), Casie Chiarotto (Jason), and Allie Rust (Spencer); great grandchildren Everett and Bennett Shipclark, Madden Rust and Aria Chiarotto; several nieces and nephews.
Don spent his final retirement years living in Sandalwood Retirement Home in Kelowna B.C., where he enjoyed his daily walks to Tim Hortons and also much time spent with special friend, Celia Ransom.
A private family memorial service and interment will take place this summer at Pinecrest Cemetery in Ottawa, On. Those who wish to remember Don may make a donation to the charity of their choice.
