We mourn the passing of our dearly beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, Louise E. Corrigan 97, of Park Avenue, Keene, NH, who passed away on February 4, 2018 at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, NH.
Her parents, John and Antoinette (Hornick) Slavik, proudly welcomed their daughter into the world on April 16, 1920 in the Bronx, New York.
From an early age, Louise resided in Northern New Jersey, in Midland Park, Glen Rock, and Ramsey. She graduated from St. Luke’s High School in Waldwick, NJ where she was interested in drama and cheerleading. Later she attended Sherwood Secretarial School in Paterson, NJ and after graduation worked as an administrative assistant in New York City at a cosmetics firm, Richard Hudnut. Louise later worked at Meyer Brothers, a department store in Paterson, where she was often requested to model their fashions and cosmetics.
Louise married Charles A. Finkel on April 27, 1940. They were married for 24 years until his passing in 1964. Louise remarried on January 14, 1967 to Mervyn J. Corrigan and they were together until his passing in 1995.
Following her marriage to Mervyn, the couple resided in Ramsey, NJ and in 1969, they moved to Boca Raton, FL where they resided for 35 years. She spent the final 13 years of her life here in Keene.
Louise loved floral arranging and over the years became an avid golfer and golf enthusiast. She was a longtime member of the Deerfield Country Club in Deerfield Beach, FL and was a club golf champion in 1991. She occasionally modeled fashions at the club as well.
She enjoyed traveling and visited Europe, West Africa, the Caribbean and Hawaii. She especially enjoyed road trips to New Hampshire and spending time on Lake Sunapee and Lake Winnipesauke. During her younger years, visits to the ocean were among her favorite activities. She considered Point Pleasant and Spring Lake, New Jersey to be particularly special locales. Later, she frequented various beaches in South Florida.
Louise absolutely adored her dachshund, Schatzi.
Louise will be lovingly remembered by her three children: daughters, Louanne I. Smith of Parkland, FL, Melissa L. Magaletta and her companion, GW Sprague, of Keene, and her step-son, Douglas C. Corrigan and his wife, Maggie, of Roswell, GA; her cherished grandchildren, Omolara Phillips and her husband, Barnell, of Parkland, Jumoke Smith of Parkland, Charles Ayodele Smith of Toronto, Canada; her great-grandchildren, Maya Phillips and Ethan Phillips of Parkland; a sister, Regina McPeek and her husband, Robert, of Geneva, IL; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Jean E. May; a son-in-law, Dr. Olajide A.O. Smith; and her companion, Robert Senior in 2002.
Her children are grateful to their mother. Her life was well lived.
A family burial service will be held in the Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, NJ where Louise will be interred with her husband, Charles A. Finkel.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made in Mrs. Corrigan’s memory to The Community Kitchen, PO Box 1315, Keene, NH 03431; or to Maplewood Nursing Home, 201 River Road, Westmoreland, NH 03467.
