He was born in McCook, Nebraska on June 7, 1943, the son of the late Stanley W. and Viola N. (Reid) Hartman. He was raised in Marion, South Dakota and graduated high school at Concordia Academy, St. Paul, MN in 1961. He received a Bachelor of Music in Education degree from Wayne State College, Wayne, NE and a Master of Science in Education degree from Drake University, Des Moines, IA.
After many years as a teacher and school administrator and working in business in Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota he was called to the Holy Ministry at the age of 60. He was ordained in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and served from 2004 to 2013 as the pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Troy, NH.
Jay is survived by his wife of 49 years Lynette A. (Jackie) nee Slutz Hartman; a son, James Reid Hartman and his wife Karen the their sons, Benjamin Reid, Samuel Roy, Daniel James, and Joshua David of Natick, MA; a son, John Kenneth Hartman of Richfield, MN; one sister, Janice Brown and her husband Ron Brown of Moscow, ID, a niece, Jeanne Vis and her husband Dan Vis and their five children of Moscow, ID; a nephew, Ryan Brown and his three children of Rapid City, SD; and a sister-in-law Kaye Flathers of Sioux Center, IA.
Calling hours for Jay will be held on Sunday, April 13 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro Street, Keene, NH. The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 14 at 11:00 AM at Christ Lutheran Church, 4 Fitzwilliam Rd (Rte. 12) in Troy, NH. Jay will be laid to rest on May 17 at the cemetery in Canistota, SD.
