He was born in Keene, NH, on September 28th, 1998, the son of Jennifer (Fredette) and Jeffrey Matthews. He attended school in Westmoreland and Keene and was set to graduate this year.
He was beloved son, brother, grandson, cousin, nephew and friend.
He played in a local band, The Steiner Youth and worked at Luca’s in Keene.
He is survived by his parents, Jennifer and Jeffrey Matthews of Westmoreland, his brother Zachary of Westmoreland, his maternal grandmother, Maureen Fredette of Westmoreland, his paternal grandparents Joanne and Charles Matthews of Swanzey, his best friend Jacob Hitchcock of Keene and dozens of cousins, aunts and uncles with whom he shared a close bond. He is predeceased by his paternal grandfather, James Fredette of Westmoreland.
Jacob was an old soul as was evidence for his passion for playing the Blues. He was well known for his kind spirit, charming smile and witty sense of humor.
He had many activities of interest but they all paled in comparison with his absolute passion for guitar. If he wasn’t at school, work or hanging out with his best friend planning their epic road trip for this coming summer, he could be found hanging out either at Retro Music or in his room playing guitar, often with his brother and often into the early hours of the morning. He would video chat with both friends and strangers jamming, learning and teaching guitar. Music was more than a hobby, it was his passion and a huge part of his identity.
Because of his passion for both learning and teaching guitar, a scholarship has been set up to honor it. The Jacob Matthews Guitar Scholarship will be used to help would be guitarists on their way with both equipment and lessons that otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it. In lieu of flowers, donations to this can be sent to The Jacob Matthews Guitar Scholarship, c/o Savings Bank of Walpole, 84 Marlborough Street, Keene NH 03431.
T-shirts to fund the scholarship can be ordered at https://jacobmatthews.secure-decoration.com
Calling hours will be from 1:30-3:00pm on Saturday March 18, 2017. The funeral service will be at 3:00pm followed by a gathering of friends and family. This will all take place at Monadnock Covenant Church, Base Hill Road, Keene NH.
