Herbert was born on February 24, 1936, in Boston, Mass., the son of Helen (Murphy) and Herbert F. Miller, Sr. He lived in Brookline, Mass. in his early years and then moved to Swanzey and later to Keene, NH.
Herb attended St. Joseph Regional School and later Keene High School.
In 1954, he joined the Air Force, stationed in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and was honorably discharged in 1957. During his time in the service, he practiced judo and drove ambulance. He received the National Defense Service Metal.
Driving was Herb’s passion in life. He loved driving tractor-trailer trucks and did so for over 30 years, retiring from Wetterau Foods in Keene.
He loved softball and played for the "Over The Hill Gang". He also enjoyed bowling, and he especially enjoyed playing golf.
He was a longtime member of the Italian Club and the Elks. He is also a member of the Gordon Bissell American Legion Keene Post #4.
He is survived by his loving wife, Paula (Sheehan) Miller of Swanzey, who he met in 1978 and married in April of 1982; his children, Denise "Dee" Russell (Paul), of Marlborough, NH, Susan Simpkins (Dale), of Warrenton, NC, David Miller (Fern), of Keene; his grandsons, Brandon Goodell (Lindsey), of Swanzey, Tyler Miller of Lacey, WA; his three great-grandchildren; his sisters, Elaine Miller Amer (Dennis), of Keene, John Miller (Kevin), of Coco Beach, FL; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. His parents, a brother, William Miller, and a sister, Marilyn Houck, predeceased him.
Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 26, at 11:00am in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street, Keene.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made in Mr. Miller’s memory to Home Healthcare Hospice and Community Services, PO Box 564, Keene, NH 03431, in grateful appreciation and as Mrs. Miller reflected "I would have no idea how I would have survived without their help, they are wonderful!"
