He was born in Hempstead, Long Island, on October 31st, 1930, the son of Arthur and Edith (Wood) Hammer. He grew up in Hempstead and was a graduate of Hempstead High School. He then attended dental school earning a degree in Dental Technology.
Mr. Hammer went on to join the US Navy serving from August 1951 through April 1953, using his dental skills stateside during the Korean War. After his military service, he returned to the private sector and founded Gordon Hammer Dental Lab, Inc.
In November 1969, he married Shirley Vernon in Mexico.
He served as President of the Dental Lab Association in Long Island for a number of years. In 2001, he retired and he, and his wife, Shirley, moved to NH.
Mr. Hammer became active in several local organizations in Keene including the Elks Lodge #927, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeerie 1413, the American Legion Gordon-Bissell Post #4, and the Italian Club.
He was active in the YMCA here in Keene for several years and also enjoyed golfing.
Mr. Hammer is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Hammer of Keene; sons Gordon Hammer, and wife Julie, of Savannah, GA and Steven Hammer of NY; stepsons Bruce Wildfeuer, and wife Caroline, of Nashville, TN, Craig Wildfeuer, and wife Louise, of FL, Garrison Wildfeuer of Pembroke, NH, Russell Vernon of AZ and Brett Vernon, and wife Amy, of Antioch, TN; twin sister Shirley Koehler of Long Island; and 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Mr. Hammer was preceded in death by his oldest granddaughter, Kimberly Speikhout in June of 2011.
Services for Mr. Hammer will be held on Saturday, June 1st, 2013, 2:00 pm at Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH. Rev. Nancy Wood will officiate. Calling hours will be held an hour before from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Gordon Hammer’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675 or to the charity of one’s choice.
