Helen Virginia Calhoun Hansard passed away early Friday morning on March 3, 2017 at the age of 90 at her home in Dallas, Texas. Helen was born to Susie Glen Calhoun and Grover Waterson Calhoun in Ola, Texas. She often expressed that some of her happiest moments were on the family farm working alongside her brothers and sisters. She was quiet, smart and hard-working throughout her formative years and graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. Helen attended Business School at Texas Woman’s University and then moved to Houston, Texas to begin her career and subsequently to raise her family. Most of her adult years were spent in Athens, Texas where she worked for United Telephone & Sprint for approximately twenty years. While in Athens, she also reignited her love of learning and attended Trinity Valley Community College to study liberal arts, music theory and psychology. Helen was well-read with varied interest in religious studies, opera, poetry, history, psychiatry and science. At the time of her death, the bible and the works of Carl Sagan and Ralph Waldo Emerson were on her nightstand. Helen loved her family dearly and the strength and courage she received from her extended meant the world to her. The shared humor and stories of childhood days were among the things that could bring tears of joy to her eyes. She had a very kind heart and a quick wit that will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Helen was predeceased by her parents and her beloved son, Bill Mackley Hansard Jr. She was also predeceased by four siblings: Bonnie Faye Habegger, Mildred Bidwell, Ruby Fern Luker, and Grover W. Calhoun, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Hansard Mabry of Gunnison, Colorado and Sherri Hansard Wolfe of Dallas, and by her twelve grandchildren: Kristi Hansard, John Hansard, Beki Hansard, Brandi Hansard, Michael Mabry, Jessica Wolfe, Glenn Wolfe, Brian Wolfe, Sean Wolfe, Katherine Wolfe, Ellen Wolfe and Grace Wolfe. Also surviving are siblings Joyce Davis of Plano, Doris Dykes of Kaufman, Hugh Calhoun of Mansfield, Royce Calhoun of Boerne and Sue Sprunger of Berne, Indiana. A Service of the Resurrection will be held for Helen at 9:30 AM on Saturday, March 11 at the Anderson-Clayton Funeral Home in Kaufman with internment following at Morrow Chapel Cemetery, Ola.
