Kelly earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1994. She worked as a Registered Nurse in orthopedics at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana and Memorial Hermann in Memorial City, Texas. For 5 years, she worked as a school nurse at Katy Junior High and for the past 17 years at Morton Ranch High School in Katy ISD.
She is preceded in death by her father, Stephen Michael Short and her grandparents, Jack and Judy Short and Paul and Margaret Dumford.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Mark Balser; daughter and son-in-law, Halee and Chris Spitzenberger of Richmond, TX, and son, Lance Balser of San Antonio, TX; Mother Deborah McLean and husband Bob McLean of Alto, TX, and step-mother, Sharon Short of Pine Village, IN; in-laws Gene and Beverly Balser of Katy, TX; sister Marci Cochran and husband Mick of Anderson, IN; and brother, Joe McLean and partner Kelly Dyben of Missouri; step-sisters Terri Waschezen of New York, Traci Hewitt and husband Mark, Tamara Goode and husband Brent of Lafayette, IN, Tonya Copley and husband Ralph of Colorado; and sister-in-law Sheri Lopez and husband Luis of Katy, TX.
