He was born Oct. 7, 1928, to William and Margarette (Laicher) Boyd and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Capital University in 1950 then entered Trinity Lutheran Seminary. In 1952, he did a year of pastoral internship at First Lutheran Church in Torrance, California, where he met and married Roberta Davies. After his internship, he and Roberta returned to Columbus where Donald completed his final year of seminary.
He began his career as an ordained Lutheran minister in Wheeling, West Virginia., and served churches in Dundalk, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Odessa, Victoria, Ganado, Santa Fe, and Kingsville, Texas. He retired to New Braunfels in 1993 and moved to Katy in 2007.
During his many years serving as a pastor, he was known for his preaching, teaching, caring compassion, and the fact that he was always the first and the last person in line at the church’s pot luck dinners.
Donald loved to fish, tell stories, and read poetry. He had several poems published in poetry anthologies and wrote several short stories he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Roberta. He is survived by their five children: Robin (Lee) Pantermuehl of Katy, Texas; Joel (Penelope) Boyd of Newport News, Virginia; Raven Boyd of Clute, Texas; Micah Boyd of Racine, Wisconsin, and Ren (Charles) Royal of Katy, Texas, as well as four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A service of remembrance for both Donald and Roberta will be held at 2:00pm on February 25, 2023 at Katy Funeral Home, 23350 Kingsland Blvd. in Katy. Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, where Donald and Roberta will be laid to rest alongside several generations of the Boyd family.
