Although her hometown was Flin Flon, Diane’s journey began in Regina, Saskatchewan—400 miles south—where her mother, Dorothy Milton, traveled to give birth due to the absence of a hospital in Flin Flon at the time. From those earliest days, Diane's life would be defined by courage and determination.
During WWII, with her father, Robert Milton, serving overseas as a radio operator in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Diane’s mother moved the family to Moncton, New Brunswick. There, young Diane took on the responsibility of helping raise her four younger brothers—instilling a sense of strength and dedication that would guide her entire life.
Diane graduated from Flin Flon Collegiate in 1948 and later fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning her Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Her career was as varied as it was impactful—working as a Medical Technologist, Teacher, and serving as President of WAIMME.
On April 8, 1952, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Wallis Archer, in Flin Flon. Together, they began a remarkable adventure that included geology prospecting in northern Canada—accompanied by their first pet, Chuckie, a spirited part-wolf dog.
Diane had a passion for learning and was an early adopter of computer technology. She used these skills to stay connected with loved ones, create cherished family cookbooks, and manage household accounting with great precision. She dedicated time to volunteer work, including Meals on Wheels, always giving back to her community.
Known for her legendary home-cooked meals—especially her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, and chicken cacciatore—Diane brought comfort and joy to everyone gathered around her table. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, reading a good book, and exploring new places through travel.
She cherished white carnations and lilies, and each anniversary, Bill gifted her yellow roses—a tradition that spoke to their enduring love.
Diane was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Dorothy Mary Reid and Robert Milton, and her brothers Bill, Abby, and Joe Milton.
She is survived by her brother, Pete Milton; her daughter, Laurel Farrell (née Archer); and her sons, Robert Archer and Ranald Archer. Her legacy lives on in them and in the many lives she touched with her compassion, courage, and unwavering love.
Diane's life was a testament to resilience, grace, and devotion. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
