Agnes passed away on April 8, 2018 at the age of 100. She was born on May 18, 1917 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Joseph and Lula Stolpmann. Agnes was the second oldest of eleven children. She was a Roman Catholic.
At age 19, Agnes married Martin Joseph Harris Sr. and had one son, Martin Joseph Harris Jr. The family moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1943 (The Secret City). She worked as a cashier at the local A&P Grocery. In April of 1975, she became a widow. After retiring from A&P, Agnes moved to Chattanooga. In February 1978, she married William Welch. The couple moved to New Port Richey, Florida. Agnes became a widow again in September of 1985. In 2004, Agnes moved to Houston, Texas to be near her family.
Agnes is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Alice Harris; her grandchildren, Stephen Harris and wife, Karen; Rodric Harris; and Samantha Harris. Agnes has three, living sisters: Frances Newell and Genevieve Bowman, Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Mary Catherine Marshall, San Diego, California; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lula Stolpmann, and siblings: Helen Vanderslice, Michael, Benjamin, Leo, Pauline, Nicholas and Frederick.
Agnes was active in the senior community, and enjoyed traveling with friends on cruises to Europe and the Caribbean. She also traveled to various places in the United States, especially Las Vegas. She was a great poker player, and she liked to tell jokes. Her favorite candy was chocolates.
A Memorial Service for Agnes will be at Chattanooga Memorial Gardens, 501 Memorial Drive, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37415, 423-877-6414 (http://www.chattanoogamemorialpark.com/), on May 19, 2018, 2 p.m. Reverend Charles Burton, Pastor of St. Jude Catholic Church, will officiate.
