Tom attended Guardian Angels grade school and Lillis and Manual High and Vocational schools. He served in the Army during the Korean War and, after completing radio school in Japan, served with the Second Infantry Division’s Signal Corps as a radio operator. Following his discharge from the Army, he went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he served as Steward and Secretary/Treasurer of the local Communication Workers of America Union. He retired in 1985 after thirty-two years of service. During retirement, Tom continued to work for the local union for several years.
Tom was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, O’Hara Council #4387 as well as an active member and volunteer of St. Matthew Apostle Catholic Church. In recent years, he volunteered at St. Joseph Health Center.
Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn, sons Thomas W. (Kathleen) and Lawrence, grandchildren Barbara and Thomas D., sisters Martha Carter and Ruth (Jerry) Wiedenmann and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter Barbara, sister Mary Martin, brothers John, James and William, and brother-in-law Donald Kobett.
His family was his pride and joy. He was a loving husband, father and friend, always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He enjoyed working with his hands and spent hours working on the family cars and as Mr. Fix-It around the house. His smile was infectious and endeared him to everyone he met.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthew Apostle Catholic Church and/or the Barbara Wynne Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Rockhurst University Biology Department.
The family would like to thank all of Tom’s friends and caregivers at Kingswood Health Center and the Catholic Community Hospice for their kindness and concern during his stay.
