Sue, better known as “Mama Sue,” was born in Richland, WA to Marion and Irma (Hammontree) Sappenfield on March 19, 1949. She attended Van Horn High School in Independence, MO. Sue worked in bookkeeping for numerous companies throughout her career. She retired from Harry J. Epstein Co. in 2020.
Some of her favorite pastimes included going to the lake, fishing, camping and listening to music. She was especially fond of going to Neil Diamond concerts. She also loved going to weekend breakfasts and shopping with John.
In her prime, Sue enjoyed her Virginia Slims with a Milwaukee’s “Beast” with a nice helping of Mentholatum on her lips.
Sue will be remembered as a hardworking, single mom to her children but “Mama Sue” had many kids, including Paxton, Dustin, Raymond, Anthony, Mike, “the Squez’s,” Colin, Amanda, Katie, Ben, Jackson, Nicole, Sanderson, Nut and many more Oakies. She will be deeply missed by many.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Irma; sister, Marilyn Fata; and former spouse, D. Keith Mayer.
She is survived by her son, Alexander (Stacy) Mayer; daughter, Peggy Mayer; granddaughter, Journee Hexum Kuhn; grandson, Mason Levi Mayer; and niece, Tammy Murphy.
