Her employment included Lake City Ammunition Plant and AT&T. Her last employment was manager at Internal Revenue Service, where some of her colleagues/co-workers stated she was “no nonsense, very professional” classy lady with a beautiful smile. She retired in Jan. 2005 after 37 years of service.
After retirement, she also worked as an Election Poll Worker elevating to the position of supervisor.
She was a member of Concord Fortress of Hope Church and as a member of the Senior Ministry Out-Reach program, she assisted in providing meals and monthly activities to residents of Swope Parkway Nursing Home. She had the ability to embrace, adapt and persevere through each new challenge due to her deceased husband and daughter’s health issues because of her faith and trust in God.
She always had opinions and words of advice, when asked. Her favorite saying was “keep it moving.”
Sammie Ray was an avid shopper and was known and admired for her impeccable fashion style which included her love for hats.
Bowling was one of her passions and she traveled to many out-of-town tournaments with her beloved “Golden Girls” and somehow, they always managed to find a casino along the way.
She enjoyed the numerous cross-country bus trips taken with the Senior group and at least fifteen cruises with her husband in her lifetime.
She leaves to cherish her memories, an awesome son Anthony “Tony” King of Lee’s Summit, MO. (3) brothers, Jerome Hall (Bonnie), Jimmie G. Hall and Johnny W. Hall; (4) sisters, Betty Jones (Crayton), Audrey M. Senghor (Khary), Ernestine Brown (Emerson) and Barbara L. Hall; also, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Sammie Ray was preceded in death by parents, Sammie L. Hall, and Bessie L. Black Hall, (1) sister Juanita Whittaker Carter Bates, her husband of 53 years Gerald M. King and daughter Tracie King Rucker.
A Celebration of Life for Sammie will be held Monday, March 13, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131. A Committal Service will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048. Family and friends may visit from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home.
