Roy Campbell was the only child of Paul and Isadore and spent his early years on Kansas City’s west side. He attended Switzer Grade School, West Junior High and Manual High School.
He was a Boy Scout and spent many happy days working on projects at Mattie Rhodes Community Center. As a teenager, he discovered roller skating and was a skate boy at the Pla-Mor roller rink. It was there that he met his wonderful wife, Katy Heenan, who was also an avid skater. Roy served in the Navy on the battleship Idaho during World War II. After he returned from the war, he and Katy were married.
Roy knew from a very young age that he wanted to be an artist. He attended the Kansas City Art Institute. He worked under Bernard Martin on illustrations for 2 children’s books (“Smoky Poky” and “Little Squeegy Bug”). He later was employed by Western Auto doing product illustrations for newspaper advertisements, then spent the rest of his career as a commercial artist working for several advertising agencies (Potts-Woodbury, Standard and O’Hern and Batz-Hodgson-Neuwoehner) and for free-lance clients.
Roy had many hobbies and interests. He spent a lot of time at his drafting table or in his workshop or garage building and creating. He enjoyed woodworking, racing, boating, fishing, slot cars, remote control cars and planes, biking, west coast swing dancing and watercolor painting. He taught watercolor classes at local community centers and at Village Presbyterian Church. He loved animals and nature, had a sharp mind and a great sense of humor.
Roy was fortunate to have many people who cared about him. This group is made up of not only his family, but also his old friends, many of whom he knew from his childhood and the roller rink. He was also blessed to have many new friends who entered his life after the death of his wife, Katy. He will be greatly missed by all of them, especially his daughter, Kelly Campbell.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kansas City Hospice, Wayside Waifs or Operation Wildlife.
