Bob Buchman, 88, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, June 1, 2013 with his wife, Phyllis Buchman & daughter, Brenda Wyatt by his side at Northcare Hospice House, North Kansas City, MO.
Bob was born July 3, 1924, he was the 2nd child of Fred & Essie Buchman of Council Grove, KS. Bob Graduated from Bushong High School at the age of 16 as class valedictorian, May 1941. After high school Bob worked various farming jobs until he joined the US Army on June 11, 1943. He was stationed in Fort Monroe, VA where he attended radar training school and served his country with the 45th Artillery Battalion, as a Staff Sergeant on several South Pacific islands. When ask to tell a “WWII war story” he stated “I only remember the funny stories, not the bad ones”. Bob’s tour of duty ended on December 30, 1945.
In January, 1951, at Warren’s Sundries, in Wichita, KS he met the love of his life, Phyllis Rainey and were married July 3rd, 1951. In their, almost 62 years of marriage, Bob never wavered in his love and commitment for his wife. He often said “Whatever Mother wants, Mother gets”. Together they started their life and raised four children, Brenda, Peggy, Scott & Diana.
Bob started his career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in 1951 in Wichita, KS and was promoted to management in December 1959 which took him and his family to Kansas City, MO. He retired as Network Manager of Missouri on February 19, 1985. After 37 years of service with Southwestern Bell he retired with a perfect attendance record.
While in Kansas City, Bob was an active member in his Church, PTA, Masons, VFW, American Legion, and an advisor to Junior Achievement. Bob was very dedicated to The Boy Scouts of America where he served as District Commissioner, Assistant Webaloes Leader, and Scoutmaster of Troop 314. He is a member of the Mic-O-Say Tribunal Council. He made a lasting impression on young men and inspired countless leaders.
After retirement Bob & Phyllis moved to Phoenix, AZ where their daughters Peggy & Diana had moved. Bob was an active member and President of Arizona Association of Manufactured Home Owners (AAHMO).
Bob’s endless energy and enthusiasm toward life has been a true inspiration to his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Phyllis, Bob is survived by his daughter, Brenda Wyatt (Roy) of Kansas City MO, son , Scott (Christi) of Kansas City, MO, daughter, Diana Boers (Brian) of Pine, AZ. He has 6 grandchildren, Ashley, Kerri, Eric, Alex, Stacie & Abbie and 3 great granddaughters, Isabelle, Lillian & Emma and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Clyde & Dale, sister, Dorothy and his beloved daughter Peggy, whom is dearly loved and missed.
