Richard Lee Odor, a longtime resident of Raytown Missouri, was born February 10, 1928 to Carlyle Kurtz Odor and Crystal (Ford) Odor in Columbia Missouri, and passed away on January 24, 2017 in Lees Summit Missouri. He was 88. A visitation will be held at 11 a.m on Saturday January 28th at Floral Hills in Kansas City, Missouri. Services will start at 12:00 p.m., immediately following the visitation. A loyal sports fan, Richard was All-State at Hickman High School in Columbia for four sports: football, basketball, track and baseball. He attended college at MU in Columbia, where he majored in history, participated in track, and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He was also an avid golfer throughout his life and was proud of his 3 holes-in-one accomplishment. He was still shooting 80 at 80 years old. Aside from remaining true to his beloved alma mater’s sport teams, he also loved the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, as well as the St Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed “coaching” all of his favorite teams from the comfort of his home in recent years and was known to make lively commentary during games. Richard served his country in the US Army during World War II. He was stationed in Okinawa Japan from November 1946 through February 1948. During his time in the Army, he travelled to many places, including the Philippines and throughout Japan. Richard worked for Hopes Windows Inc. for 55 years as a manufacturer’s representative, working closely with architects on projects that he was proud to tell his friends and family about. He loved to tell about the buildings that he had contributed to through his work, and share stories of the people he met while on the job. He did not retire completely from Hopes until just last year in 2016. Amongst all of his accomplishments throughout his sport endeavors, education, career, and service to his country, the greatest pride and joy of his life was his family. Richard met Nancy Foster in 1952, on a blind date arranged by mutual friends after Nancy moved to Kansas City from Oklahoma. After their third date, he asked Nancy to meet his family. She hesitated at the quick timing of his request, but after he told her he had already written home to his parents about her, she said yes. A proper courtship followed, and they were united in marriage on April 14th, 1956. Richard and Nancy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. Together they raised two daughters, Julie and Jan, and had one grandson, Jonathan. Their family was fortunate to experience many world travels together. From Italy and Spain, to Ireland, Barbados, and across the United States, they had fun together as a family, whether they were in their own backyard or travelling abroad. Richard also had several lifelong friendships, some that started when he was in elementary school and lasted until his death. The art of maintaining lifelong relationships was something that both he and Nancy grasped naturally, and they instilled this in Julie & Jan. The circles of friends created by their family are extensive and overlapping. Through those of us that Richard leaves behind, those relationships will serve as one of his greatest marks on the world. Richard is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the home; his two daughters, Julie of Bothell, WA; Jan Murski and husband Cullen of Greenwood, MO; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him tremendously. Preceding him in death were two brothers, his twin Raymond Odor, and C.K. Odor; and his grandson, Jonathan Horsch. Condolences for the family may be offered at www.floralhillsfuneralhome.com.
