He is survived by his wife Mary C. Nagy MD and his son Breck Mundis, as well as stepsons Jeff Nagy, Bryan and Elizabeth Nagy, Matt Nagy, Grant Pattison and step daughter Natalie Pattison; grandsons Cooper and Grayson Nagy and Baby Boy Nagy due early February of 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Minerva Mundis.
Dr. Mundis was triple board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology and practiced medicine for 37 years until he retired in 2017. He received his undergraduate degree at KU, where he also attended medical school. His Internal Medicine residency was at St. Luke’s and then his fellowships were at the Mayo clinic.
After a brief private practice in Peoria, Illinois, he moved back to KC and joined the Oncology Hematology Clinic of Kansas City which then was purchased by American Oncology Resources. Then ultimately, they became part of KU Oncology. The University of Kansas Cancer Center has been designated as a “Comprehensive” cancer center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This is the highest level of recognition awarded by the NCI and is the gold standard for cancer centers.
A highlight of his career was presenting at the Annual KU Hematology Conference and was introduced as a “Legend in his own time” which he truly was! He said, “would someone call my wife, she missed the legend part”.
Rick enjoyed tennis, skiing, playing bridge and most importantly teaching Cooper the game of football. He played the guitar in a band in high school and was very musically inclined. His favorite music was alternative, and he loved poetry. He was extremely bright and witty and enjoyed bantering back and forth with his good friends.
Services will be held at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131 on Monday, December 19, 2022. The visitation will start at 9:00 a.m.followed by the funeral at 10:00am. A burial will follow in the Garden Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Kansas City Hospice at KCHospice.org.
