Ramona M. Walker, devoted wife of 70 years to the late Robin Ellis Walker, and beloved mother of Carol, Chris, Robin, and Lloyd, died peacefully in her sleep at home in Prairie Village KS on January 3, 2016. She was 96.
Ramona loved life and lived it with joy, devoting herself to her children, her friends and the community.
She was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church, and recently honored by her sorority Delta Gamma for her 75 year membership. She was involved in the origin of the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired and was a member of Trinity Hospital Auxiliary. She was active playing tennis, and met weekly with a couples tennis group, the Rowdy Infighters, well into her 90s.
Ramona was born in Salt Lake City to Walter and Mildred Helander Cedarholm, originally of Lindsborg, Kansas. They moved to Kansas City when Ramona was six months old where she attended Henry Kumpf School, Westport High School, Kansas City Junior College, and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
After six years of courtship, she married the dashing Robin Ellis Walker on 1941. He couldn’t believe his good luck. Kindness, graciousness, and love of family and fun kept this relationship sparkling well into their 90s. Ramona’s main career was taking care of her family. However, when her youngest grew up, and after visiting Europe with her daughter, she became a travel agent with Voyager Travel and subsequently traveled to Europe 25 times.
Ramona is survived by their children Carol Walker Dobbs (Greg), Christine Walker (Dennis Hysom), Robin Walker-Lee (Richard), and Lloyd Walker (Liz). Six grandchildren Anna, Jason, Alex, Marshall, Quinn, and Olympia called their dear grandmother “Mona” and little Sam and Jake called her their “GG Mona.”
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2016, at First Lutheran Church, 6400 State Line Rd., Mission Hills KS 66208. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ramona’s honor to First Lutheran Church or to the charity of your choice.
