Patrick Joseph Ervin

Pat was born June 6, 1946, in St. Louis, MO, the son of Robert and Mary (O’Connor) Ervin. Patrick grew up in Guardian Angels Parish, in Kansas City, Missouri, with his siblings—Jed (Sharon), Danny (Debbie), Bob (Susan), Paul, and Anne (Scott). He graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1964 and earned his business degree from Benedictine College.

He married Kathy (Schloegel) on August 15, 1970, and loved her deeply during their 51 years of marriage. He was immensely proud of his six children, Ryan (Niki), Kasi (Shawn), Regan (Becky), Kyle (Lisa), Kelsi, and Konnor (Hallie). He impressed upon them the importance of having loyalty, character, and a really solid cover letter.

He was “Pops” to 15 grandkids (RJ, Tressa (Corey), Josey, Mikey, Kyelan, Cris, Beah, Lovie, Lexie, Liv, Royal, Captain, Cosmo, Wade, Vaughn) and 3 great grandkids (Kaiser, Lennon, Mae). He was always the first to go into rounds of additional songs at their birthday celebrations. “He wore tan shoes and pink shoelaces…”

Pat was passionate about big blockbuster movies, loud music (from worship songs to Top 40), his mobile phone, and Sporting KC—but more than anything, he was passionate about people. He genuinely enjoyed getting to know everyone he met, he never hesitated to connect people within his endless network, and he was always looking for (and finding) ways to help others. He must have known his life would be too short for arguments and animosity, as he always took the high road and focused on the best in people.

Pat was a man of faith who put his heart and trust into our heavenly Father, and Pat knew that God loved him and gave him grace every day of his life. He was reunited with his parents and his brothers Danny and Paul in heaven. No doubt by now, Pat’s already figured out how to sneak his way into heaven’s VIP area, and cannot wait to show the rest of us how to do the same.

While his family will miss him tremendously, there is comfort in knowing that across Kansas City and beyond, the world is a better place with all the famous “Big Pat” stories out there. Some of the classic stories will be shared at Pat’s Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 16 at 1PM at the Shield Club inside Children’s Mercy Park/Stadium. Casual and/or Sporting KC fan attire is encouraged. Masks are required in the facility.
