Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road. Committal service will follow in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Born to the parentage of William Julius (deceased) and Olivia GIlmore Scales (deceased) in Washington, Washington County, Texas on August 25, 1937, the third child and first daughter, Olivia Largene "Jean" Scales spend her formative years in Washington and Houston, Texas. Later, in 1946, the Scales family moved to the Hickory Grove Community in Wolfe City, Texas, and Olivia became big sister to a younger brother and sister whom she treated as her very own. It was in Wolfe City where her life's principles were shaped. In her early teens, Olivia accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized by Rev. J.M. Sims of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church. Although she joined with Christian believers after leaving Wolfe City, she did not forget her spiritual beginning and was a regular contributor to her home church. Upon moved to Kansas City, she united with Swope Park Baptist Church and until her health failed, was an active member of the now Grace Point Baptist Church and Kansas City Baptist Temple. In 1965, Olivia married Otis Wendell Robins of Hugo, Oklahoma and the couple made their home in Kansas City, Missouri. To this union, two children were born, Owen Wendell and Ouida Lynette. Her energy was spent on providing for the well being of her family. A supportive and devoted wife and an advocate for her children, she consistently encouraged them in their spiritual, social and academic growth. As an avid booster of her children's activities, Olivia cheered at her son's hockey games and at her daughter's figure skating events. She placed a strong emphasis upon the whole development of her children, adhering to scripture throughout their lives. After graduating from St. Paul High School in Neylandville, Texas, Olivia received her Bachelor of Arts in English and Music from Bishop College (Marshall, Texas) and her Masters of Arts in English from The University of South Carolina. She enjoyed a rewarding career in teaching, spanning over the forty years educating youth in Oklahoma and Missouri. A music enthusiast, Olivia was a faithful member of the XYZ choir (Grace Point Baptist Church) and the Raytown Community Choir (Raytown, Missouri). Attending rehearsals and concerts, as well as traveling with the choirs, was a highlight of her retirement years. Spreading the word of God through song brought her joy. Her inherent nature of giving and love of people was manifested through her involvement with several charitable organizations: The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., The Kansas City Ballet Guild, The Lyric Opera Guild of Kansas City, Friends of the Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Shakespeare Festival. Olivia was preceded in death by her parents and brother, James Onor Scales. Left to cherish her memory are: her children, Owen of Kansas City and Ouida of Pasadena, California; sister, Gloria Faye Scales (Collins) of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Julius Gilmore Scales (Gladys) of Wolfe City, Texas and George Henry Scales (Iris) of Dallas, Texas, as well as a host of relatives and friends.
