Mary was born December 26, 1947 in Great Bend, Kansas and raised in Kansas City, Missouri with her twin sister Margaret Evans. Both parents, Freddie Florence and Peggy Green, as well as her sister Geraldine Hawkins preceded her in death.
Mary grew up in the Kansas City School District attending Graceland Elementary School, and graduated from Paseo High School’s Class of ’65. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources from Park University. She married Willie Burroughs on June 6, 1970. They were happily married for 49 years. She confessed Christ at an early age and had an unwavering faith in God. She worshiped for over 60 years at Pentecostal Church of Jesus Only, now known as the Greater Pentecostal Temple under the leadership of Bishop Marvin E. Donaldson.
Mary worked at Hallmark Cards and Marion Lab for 15 years each, and recently retired from Homeland Security/Citizenship and Immigration Services. Mary was a loving mother to her children and an excellent cook. She enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. Mary never let anyone go hungry, she fed everyone. She was a former board member of Rose Brooks Shelter, the Institute of Supply Management, as well as the National Association for Marketing Developers. She was an active member of the American Business Women’s Association, the Boys and Girls Club, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Beta Omega Chapter where she held several offices and received numerous accolades. Her favorite pastimes included going to church and socializing with her sorority sisters. She also enjoyed spending quality time with her family, especially her twin sister Margaret.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory her husband Willie Burroughs; her children Damon, Eric “Jason”, and Monica; her twin sister Dr. Margaret Evans and sisters Dorothy Hawkins and Christine Cunningham; grandchildren: Damon Jr., Celeste, Darrien, DeAngelo, Lauryn, Jason, Donovan, Vivian; one great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
The celebration of life services will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Greater Pentecostal Temple, 864 Splitlog Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas 66101. A visitation will be held from 9:00-10:00am, followed by the Ivy Beyond the Wall service (open to the public) at 10:00am. The funeral service will begin at 10:30am. The interment will be held at Mount Moriah Cemetery South, located at 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri.
