Margaret (Margot) Willey Carroll was born June 18, 1924 in Liverpool, England to John Willey & Margaret (Peg) Blundell Willey. When her father nicknamed Margaret ‘Margot’ it was a name that stuck, as all knew her as Margot. Margot excelled in school, earning a Liverpool Junior City Scholarship to what America would consider a “Private” school when she was 11, an honor for which she was very proud. Her education continued at Hereford Teachers’ College, University of Birmingham/Midland, graduating on July 28, 1944. Margot worked as a teacher in all subjects, which began her life of service to others. While teaching, she volunteered to distribute coffee, donuts & other snacks to the American G.I.’s that were stationed at Burtonwood. It was there that she met the love of her life, Adron Carroll, from Blue Diamond, KY. They married on Oct. 13, 1945 at All Saints Church in Childwell, Liverpool. Adron & Margot traveled the world since Adron was in the Air Force for 30 years. Choosing to become an American Citizen Margot was naturalized on Aug. 10, 1954.
Margot shined as a military wife; entertaining and continuing her community service by volunteering at Base Thrift Stores & Hospitals and serving as a Brownie/Girl Scout Leader. In 1973, Margot returned to school, attending St. Luke’s School of Nursing and graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She also received an Associate of Applied Science from Penn Valley Nursing School, serving as class Chaplain, graduating in 1978. As a Registered Nurse in MO and KS, she worked at St. Luke’s on the Plaza for several years & as a Visiting Nurse. During the 1970’s & 80’s Margot volunteered at The Good Samaritan Project, Planned Parenthood; joined a Grief Group which held together and met monthly for over 25 years & volunteered for the Raytown Shepherd’s Center, driving people to medical appointments.
The constant driving force was always her dedication to God and the Episcopal Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, leading Children’s Church, leading Bible Studies in her home, serving as Church Woman’s President & Treasurer and always singing in the Choir. Her faith was also evident in her long term attendance at Al-anon, where she once again was support to others as well as herself.
Margot was preceded in death by her parents & husband. She is survived by her younger brothers, Kenneth J. Willey of Farnham, Surrey, United Kingdom & Graeme B. Willey of Mt. Eliza, Victoria, Australia; four children, Linda M. Sherwood (Robert), Andrew L. Carroll (Carolyn), Philip L. Carroll (Tonia) & Barbara J. Wegener (Daniel Scroggins); former son-in- law, Donald Wegener & former daughter-in-law Phyllis Carroll.
