Visitation will be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church 2003 NE Englewood Road Kansas City, MO on Saturday December 10, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service starting at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Green Lawn Cemetery in Afton, Iowa at 3:30 p.m.
Lucia was born on April 2, 1937 in Marjanka, Poland to Rudolf and Emma Jeske. In 1952, at the age of 15, her father, mother, sisters Martha and Waldine, brothers Edmund and Siegfried all immigrated to the United States through the America Resettlement program under the Lutheran World Service. Two of her siblings did not immigrate at that time. Lucia’s sister Amanda stayed in Germany as she was married the day before the family left for America. Her sister Olga and her family stayed as well. The family saved up enough money by 1956 to bring Olga and her family to the United States. On September 3, 1958 Lucia was Nationalized as an American citizen.
Lucia graduated from Afton High School in 1956. She married John Smith Stalcup December 25, 1960 in Creston, Iowa and were married 58 years. Lucia and John had four children, Timothy, Theresa, Brenda and Michael.
Lucia was a housewife until 1979. When the last child was in school, she decided to go back to work. Lucia worked for the North Kansas City School District in the cafeterias. Her last school was Clardy Elementary as the baker. She made awesome desserts and breads for those little children every day. She was a favorite of the children and to the staff. She retired in 2003 with 24 years of service.
Lucia was a very talented lady. She loved to sew, knit, crochet, quilt, paint ceramics and cooking. She had such an amazing talent with crocheting and knitting. The patterns she could knit and crochet were works total of works of art. She made numerous amounts of beautiful afghans and blankets for every family member. No one went cold in this family. She also had a very green thumb. She could grow anything! She loved her collection of African Violets indoors to Iris’s outdoors, along with many other species of plants.
Lucia and John traveled to Germany many times. They took all four children and Lucia’s mother to Germany in 1978. It was a vacation of a lifetime for all. They spent three weeks traveling visiting relatives and seeing many sites throughout Europe. Lucia and John traveled the United States visiting many relatives during their retirement. They also enjoyed all seven of their grandchildren. They attended numerous amounts of sporting events, school events and band concerts for all of them. The grandchildren enjoyed spending time with grandma making cookies and eating them with grandma.
Lucia is preceded in death by her parents Rudolf and Emma Jeske. Her Husband John, son Timothy, sister Amanda Hanish, brother in-law Bernard Hanish, brother Edmund Jeske, sister Olga Moestchen and brother in-law Hans Moestchen.
She is survived by her children, Theresa (Matthew) Green, Brenda (Mike) Wehmeir, Michael Stalcup and her grandchildren, Alexandria (Tony) Haley, Christian Exposito, Marriann (Nathan) Weaver, Emma Green, Jack Green, Sarah Stalcup, Caleb Wehmeir and great granddaughter, Rosalie Haley. Her sister’s Martha McAuley, Waldina Greenslate and brother Seigfried Jeske, along with many other family members, including sister and brother-in laws, nieces, nephews, friends and caregivers who will miss her dearly. Lucia was well known for her hugs. Caregivers would come to see her just to get a hug from her.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation the Alzheimer’s Association.
