Leroy Edward Engle

Dr. Leroy Edward (Ed) Engle, 94, of Leawood, Kansas, formerly of Carthage, Missouri, passed away October 26th, 2021, in Leawood, Kansas. He was born in Valley Falls, Kansas to Earl and Myra Engle. Ed graduated from Valley Falls High School and entered the United States Navy in 1945 serving during World War II aboard the USS Fletcher (DD-445). He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and worked for a short time in northern California as a brakeman for the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. He later attended Ottawa University and transferred to Emporia State University where he graduated with a BA degree in 1953. He attended dental school at the University of Kansas City and graduated in 1957. Ed married Emogene (Jeannie) in 1955 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ed and Jeannie moved to Carthage, Missouri in 1957, where they established a dental practice and raised two daughters. In 1974, the family moved to Galveston, Texas, where Ed completed a medical anesthesia residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston, followed with an anesthesiology fellowship. The family returned to Carthage, Missouri where Ed became chief of anesthesia at McCune Brooks Hospital. He also served other area hospitals in southwest Missouri. He retired in 1999, and the couple moved to Overland Park, KS.

Ed was a member of the International Anesthesia Research Society, The American Academy of Clinical Anesthesiologists, and life member of the American Dental Association (Kansas and Missouri). He did post graduate studies at Northwestern University, the University of Nebraska, the University of Kansas, and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in Washington, D.C. Ed was an elder, Sunday school superintendent and lay speaker at the First Presbyterian Church in Carthage. He was also a past member of the Carthage Rotary Club and served other civic groups.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; six siblings, Alice, Eva, twin brother Earl, Pauline, Ruth and George; and by an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, two daughters, Laura Marie Berg (Roger) and Mary Susan Davidson (Doug); four grandchildren, Roger Berg (Holly), Stephanie DeMaree (Sean), Elliott Davidson, and Elizabeth Davidson; and by three great-grandchildren, Alexis and Andie Berg and Lucy DeMaree.

Ed was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a humble, caring and fun-loving person who most enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed good humor and good-natured joking. He had a curious mind and enjoyed learning new things and exploring new hobbies. He loved to travel, especially with family and friends, and visited all fifty states and several foreign countries. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals and his beloved Jayhawks.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Carthage, 115 W Chestnut St., Carthage, MO 64836. A graveside service will take place at a future date in Carthage.
