Kathleen (Cappy) Ann Hilburn, 69, resident of Blue Springs, MO, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at her home. She was born on November 2, 1952, to Joseph Percy Lewis, Jr. and Eleanor Louisa Hubschmitt in Mineola, New York.
Cappy’s mother died in 1959. A year later Cappy and her family moved to Florida, where her dad got remarried to Ditty Dowdell. Cappy spent most of her childhood in Del Ray Beach, Florida. Growing up, Cappy and her brothers delivered newspapers in the middle of the night, would sleep for a couple of hours, and then get up and go to school. She had many great memories of the fun they had delivering newspapers as kids.
When Cappy got older, she moved to Kansas City, Mo, where she met Ralph David Hilburn. They were united in marriage on June 1, 1991, and moved to Blue Springs, Mo. David and his brothers owned Hilburn Trucking where Cappy learned how to drive a semi-truck and earned her CDL. They spent many days in an 18-wheeler together, with their dog Sally in tow, delivering loads and having fun along the way.
Cappy loved to swim and go the beach. She and David would often take trips back to Florida to see her family and visit where she grew up. She was a big fan of the KC Royals and they enjoyed watching the games together on TV. She loved to take walks at the park, behind their house, enjoyed her morning coffee with half-n-half, and spending time with her family.
Cappy and David bought a cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks, where they spent several years restoring it together. She enjoyed decorating the cabin and hand-making the curtains. They enjoyed having family and friends down to the cabin for the weekend. She and David would go on “lake exploring adventures” together. She also enjoyed fishing, boating, and swimming.
To describe Cappy in a few words, it would be thoughtful, kind, and adventurous. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Survivors include husband, Ralph David Hilburn, son, Shawn Eckhoff, stepson, David Hilburn (Michelle), stepdaughter Rose Sahrawat (Dinesh), three grandchildren, Maya (I “heart” you), Rishi, and Christian, sister, Laura Dalton, and three stepbrothers, Mark, George, and Robin. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Joe Percy Lewis, III.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2022, at Floral Hills Funeral Home 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133. Funeral service will start at 2 p.m.
