John Vincent Smith, of Kansas City Missouri, was born June 4, 1931. He passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. Private funeral services and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on May 14, 2021. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rockhurst University Physical Therapy Scholarship Fund.
Jack and his brother, Ed, were owners of Gate City Glass, a company started by their father, Edward Smith, in 1938. This company is still being operated by the Smith family, fourth-generation. Jack served with the US Army during the Korean War, and upon his return he married Deborah Hurley. They remained happily married for sixty-six years. Jack was a lifelong Catholic and attended Rockhurst HIgh School and College. He was a member of Saint Thomas More Parish.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Smith, his son, Thomas Vincent Smith, and his sisters, Mary Pat Smith, Delores Elliot, and Martha Heydon. He is survived by his brother Ed and his daughters, Amy Smith Foley and Shannon Peeples (Keith), and his daughter-in-law Lisa Smith. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Nick (Andrea), Brent (Kit), Jessie (Frank), Lauren, Alex, Claire (Josh), Dylan, Griffin (Molly), and Maggie (Lee) and five great-grandchildren (Harper, Henry, Whitley, Mason, and Frankie Mae).
He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, a master glazier, and an avid skier. The family wishes to thank the staff of CareHaven Homes.
