John E. Neal, 91, passed away October 27, 2014 at the Kansas City Hospice House. John was born August 27, 1923 in Warsaw, MO and grew up in Excelsior Springs, MO. He graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1941 and attended Business College in Kansas City, MO. He also attended Kansas University and was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 and was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers for 42 years. He retired from the Corps in 1980. He was a member of Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church. John was active in the Boy Scouts of America and served as Scout Master of Troop 264 for several years and also served on the Boy Scout Heart of America Regional Council. John loved to fish, play cards, work crossword puzzles, and was an avid KU sports fan. He also enjoyed socializing with family and friends.
John is survived by a brother, Bob Neal of Excelsior Springs, MO; 3 daughters, Marsha Smith (Bob) of Kansas City, MO, Janet Bowling (Butch) of Chandler, AZ and Carol Dooley (Dennis) of Excelsior Springs, MO; 1 son, Eddie Neal (Kathy) of Grain Valley, MO and son-in-law John Craig of Kansas City, MO; 9 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Lavona; a son, John M. Neal; his parents, Edward and Elsie Neal and 4 sisters, Wanda Rogers, Lea Mills, Pat Craig, and Jeanne Hartman.
Visitation will be at 12 pm followed by a celebration of life at 1 pm at Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 1, 2014. Memorial contributions can be made to the church or Kansas City Hospice.
The family would like to thank John’s hospice nurses Cindy, Cappi and Cheryl, his bath aide, Cindy, Chaplain Leslie, caregiver Estella, and other members of Kansas City Hospice for the caring assistance provided to John and his family. Thank you to Senior Bridge and especially caregivers Mark and Courtney. Also, the family would like to thank Bailey and Brooklin Smith for their assistance with John. Additionally, thanks to the Staff of Villa Ventura for their care of John for the last few months.
