John Rodgers Murphy Jr.

I first want to take a moment to give a huge thank you to everyone who has reached out and really showed us just how many people dad touched along his journey. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. The hardest thing I have had to do is sit down and write this. I never in a million years thought my heart could ever hurt this much but each one of you who reached out truly helped us get through this. The life that has been gifted to me by my amazing parents is a life I am proud of. It has been so beautiful that there is just no way I wanted to face a world without my Dad in it. A world without my Dad in it would be to cruel to live in. Yet it is because of the finality of death and the gaping hole that it leaves ones heart, that this ride is so very special and unique. It is absolutely mind-blowing to know that in all the time and in its vastness of space. I have had the opportunity of experience, I can do nothing else but thank both my parents from the bottom of my heart for their love and guidance. In the end all that matters is that we are with the ones we love. I have to thank them both even though this is my dad’s story they both wrote it. My Dad passed with those he loved surrounding him at home very peacefully and quite just like he wanted. Dad fought like a gladiator the strongest of them all. I am truly proud to have had the pleasure of calling him Dad and for him being my best friend.

John Rodgers Murphy Jr was born June 25 1939 and left this earth on August 26 2020 surrounded and loved by family. He was the son of COL. John Rodgers Murphy Sr. and Jeanette C Murphy. John practiced law in the Kansas City area for the better part of 50 years until retiring in 1995. He then became a dive master and taught scuba diving and traveled around the world. He then would go on to work for the City of Leawood Parks and Rec for 12 years where he met some great people. In June of 2019 John decided that it was time to relax and enjoy his time with his grandsons and family.

John is survived by his wife of 52 years Fran Murphy; Son, James Murphy and his daughter in law Nicole Murphy who he had a soft spot for; the loves of his life his grandsons Alec Murphy, Austin Murphy, and John Parker Murphy; and his great grandson Collin James Hall Cox Murphy; daughter Caroline Murphy, and grandson Neako Murphy; brother in law Jim Donigan; niece Jill Dongian and nephews Joel Donigan and Ryan Donigan who I would like to give a big thank you for being there for my dad. And a special thank you to Ed and Cathy Tieman.

It was truly a special thing to see my dad grow into a loving caring grandfather and great-grandfather. I often found myself telling my dad something I remembered hearing as a child and it would drive me nuts. Dad you need to learn how to say the word NO it was hard for him to do.

I truly give thanks for the life he has given us. He was one in a million and will be truly missed by all. It truly has been wonderful seeing how many people my dad touched in so many ways. He was a loyal friend an extremely hard worker and the best man I will ever know.
