John H. Altergott, Jr., age 86, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on October 10, 2024, surrounded by his family. John was born and raised in Kansas City, primarily in St. Elizabeth’s parish. He attended Rockhurst High School (’55) and College and earned his BS, LLB and JD at the University of Missouri, Columbia. As a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, he made lifelong friends at Mizzou.
John built a career as a well-regarded litigator and legal mediator particularly on construction matters as well as served with distinction in the US Army Reserves. He was an Eagle Scout, active Boy Scout volunteer, Girl Scout supporter, and frequent speaker at American Bar Association events. John and his family were advocates for Catholic education, particularly Notre Dame de Sion. He loved time with family and friends cheering on the MU Tigers, camping, fly fishing, hunting and traveling. He treasured having four generations of his family enjoy their Lake of the Ozarks home.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Altergott. Together, they raised daughters Mary Ann (Jim Beirne) Altergott, Amy (John) Uffendell and son, John (Jennifer) H. Altergott, III. He was a beloved grandfather to John, James, and Alex Beirne, Taylor Altergott, and Ellie and Henry Uffendell finding great joy in sharing outdoor adventures, stories and love for ice cream.
On October 25, 2024, a 9:30am visitation and 10:30am Mass will be held at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association (Alzheimer's Association | Donate to Fight Alzheimer's Disease) or Notre Dame de Sion Schools (https://www.ndsion.edu/giving/give-to-sion).
