Joe E. McClain (Billa) was born on March 5, 1941 to Bernice Whitt and Lonnie McClain in McNab, Arkansas. Early in his childhood, Joe moved to Kansas City where he and his younger brother Carl McClain were reared by parents Bernice and James Coleman, all preceded him in death.
Joe frequently said "I thank God every day for James Coleman". James' influence and leadership made him the man that he was, a Protector and Provider. Joe's family never lacked or wanted for anything! Joe was a strong, confident and proud black man who inspired others.
Joe often spoke about his childhood and his love for fishing. He played football, ran track and was a graduate of Manual High School, Kansas City, Missouri
He met and married Billa Dean Lee and had five children together, later building their dream home for the family in Lee's Summit, Missouri where they resided for over 35 years. Joe was very fond of his wife Billa's cooking, so much so that he preferred it over fine dining. Some of his stand alone favorites were fried Catfish, Black-Eyed Peas, Peach and Blackberry Cobbler and his #1 Mustard Potato Salad.
He co-owned Amoco Gas Stations throughout Kansas City with his father and founder James, for over 40 years.
He was very active in his youngest son Justin's basketball and football activities. He never missed a game. Joe's hobbies included collecting old coins and sports cards. He loved shooting pool with his brother-in-law, Walter Piercy and playing BidWiz with card partner, Katherine Higgins (Sookie), sister-in-law.
Joe loved Cadillac cars, diamonds, and taking his custom vans across country on road trips with family. His pastimes included watching sports, wrestling, and westerns, the original Gun Smoke was hard for him to live without.
Joe is survived by his wife, Billa Dean McClain of the home, three sons; Jerome, Jermaine, and Justin; two daughters; Sheri Freeman and Shalisha McClain. Eldest daughter and son, Sheila Childress and Darren McClain, from a previous marriage.
