Jim was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the son of Calvin and Nell Gill (Thompson). He was an accomplished educator, serving in the Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley School Districts for over 40 years. He was proud of his career as a teacher, counselor and administrator. He also served as an adjunct professor for 9 different universities. He held an Ed.D. in Education from the University of Kansas and was voted Master Teacher for the State of Kansas in 1986. Jim was the founding principal of Leawood and Pleasant Ridge Middle Schools in the Blue Valley School District. His heart will always be as a Leawood Middle School Eagle, where he served 17 years and remained in close contact with countless friends and colleagues over the years.
He was very dedicated to his family, marrying his high school sweetheart, Mary Lou and becoming father to his three daughters. Aside from his work in education, Jim loved photography, traveling, watching sports and especially attending baseball games at Kauffman Stadium.
Although the last portion of his life was deeply affected by Parkinson’s, Jim still kept his quick wit and welcomed visitors whenever possible. We will forever remember the young and vibrant “Dr. Gill,” playing and coaching softball, hosting badminton tournaments (Killer Giller), photographing events and making a positive impact on countless young people in the Johnson County area. Jim took pride in knowing people and truly caring about their stories wherever he went. He couldn’t leave the house without running into someone that knew him, even outside of the Kansas City area. His legacy of love and humor will live on in all those who knew him. He believed deeply in Jesus’ teachings and emulated those teachings with how he treated others.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Nell and his brother, Ron. He leaves behind his brother, Ed (Pat), sister, Judy (Dean), wife Mary Lou and daughters: Melissa, Betsy (Tim) and Jennifer (Sean). He was the proud Papa of Claire, Harrison, Olivia and Maryn. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
