James William Scott

James (Bill) William Scott, 90, of Leawood, Kansas, formerly of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on January 16, 2018.

Bill was born on July 15, 1927 in Monett, Missouri to William (Bill) and Roxie Scott. He was a graduate of Monett High School where he played the clarinet. Bill served in the Navy during WWII. He graduated from Drury University in 1950 with a degree in history. In college, Bill was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, Omicron Delta Kappa, active in the band and editor of the college newspaper, The Drury Mirror. While in college, he met his wife, Ruby Jane, whom he married in 1950 at Country Club Christian Church where he was a member. Bill dedicated his life to public education where he started as a social studies and journalism teacher in Springfield, Missouri before spending ten years in Kansas City, Missouri as a teacher then principal at Northgate Junior High. Bill spent the remainder of his career as Director of Certificated Personnel in North Kansas City School District before retiring in 1991 after 41 years of work in education. Bill will be remembered for his witty sense of humor, his writing and his love of history and knowledge.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Jane. Bill is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Wayland (Larry), granddaughters Rebecca Wayland and Kathleen Cigich (Benjamin) and great-grandson, Owen Cigich, all of Overland Park.
