Jack D. (Slick) Hughes, 94, of Independence, MO passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at Monterey Park Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 from 5pm to 7pm at McGilley & Sheil Funeral Home, 11924 E. 47th St., Kansas City, MO 64133. Interment will be Friday, February 17, 2023 at 10am at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO.
Jack was born April 22, 1928 to James and Florence Hughes in Osawatomie, KS. He served in the Army from 1952-1956 and was an MP in the Korean War. He was also a member of Ararat Shrine-Legion of Honor. After an honorable discharge for the Army, he settled in Kansas City and had a career in the bank finance and loan departments for Chrisman-Sawyer Bank, Dealers Service Plan, and others. In retirement, he found joy in attending auctions, antiques, collectibles, and refinishing old furniture. He was also active in volunteering his time to assist in military funerals. He enjoyed local sports teams, played competitive fastpitch softball, golfing with his sons, and always had a joke or quip ready for any occasion.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents & three sisters, Lillian Walters, Dorothy Long, and Marjorie Coombes. He is survived by his four children from his marriage to D. Coleen Hughes, a daughter, Gail Hobbs; sons, Jack (Michelle) Hughes Jr., Vern Hughes (Debra Wilkins) & Roger (Susan) Hughes; six grandchildren, Jessica (Nick) Welker, Alanna (Matt) Martin, Grant Hughes, Ryan (Ashly) Hughes, Riley Hughes & Megan Denslow (Tim Duncan); four great grandchildren, Gracelynn Martin, Harper Martin, Benson Welker and Hunter Denslow.
