I also worked with Helen in the 1980s at the Missouri Restaurant Association. I don't know why Thelma, Carl, Ed Gray, Max Koerner and all of them were on my mind, but I'm missing Helen's sweet, easy-going personality today.

Hello,  I worked with Helen at MO Restaurant Association in the late 1980's.  She was hard working and loyal.  I was a young mother at the time.  I asked, "If you could change anything in the past, what would it be?"  Helen replied, "I would not have been as strict with my children."  I doubt she was unreasonably strict.  When I learned of Helen's death I wanted to call someone.  I contacted Village Shalom, but Thelma Wolfe passed away some years ago.  And so are the others: Carl Degen, Ed Gray, & Mary Moran. Dear Jeff, Janet and family, I was so privileged to know your mother for more than 50 years.  As members of the Delta Theta Chi Sorority, an educational group that met year round...we saw a lot of each other.  We always enjoyed her wonderful hospitality (the beautiful blue room) and great food, and willingness to help wherever we needed her.

My mother and your mother went to Ward together and have remained in contact since then. Even in their 80's, when we would go back to Kansas to visit, our Mom's would get together. I could easily envision them in High School. Laughing and giggling like it was yesterday. As Mom's mind wanders, she talks more and more of her old friends, walking to school, ... Dear Janet and family, So sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. May our loving God put his warm and comforting arms around  you and give you the strength you need in this time of sorrow.

 My sincerest sympathies to the family of Helen Chappell for their great loss. I first met Helen when I went to work at the Missouri Restaurant Association in 1978. She immediately became someone I could turn to for help and advice. She was the original Martha Stewart. Many a time I had the pleasure of enjoying one of her incredible desserts. May God grant her eternal rest.

My Aunt Helen was married to my Mom's (Ruth Chappell) brother Earl.  I remember visits to her home in Kansas City as a child.  I saw her last in 2008 during my latest visit to Missouri.  I was hoping to see her once again when I visit later this year, but sadly that will not happen.  I will miss her.

Dear Janet and family,

I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's death.  It is just hard to lose someone you love - my prayers are with you.  I remember your Mom as our girl scout leader at St. E.  I remember sewing and doing all kinds of fun activities.  I especially remember going on a 21 mile hike.  (We wanted to beat the boy scouts who had hiked 20 miles.) She hiked right with us past the old airport on State Line and 135th, past the old Stanley High School --- I think we camped at Lone Jack.  Those are great memories and she was an important part of teaching us great life lessons.  My heart goes out to you.

I met Helen thru her daughter Janet...while she lived with Janet, she joined us in playing Tripoley and Bridge and believe me, she was great at both!  It was also my deep joy to be able to bring Holy Communion to her at Janet's house.  She will be greatly missed.

Helen was an excellent cook, a great bridge player, a devout Christian, a dear friend, an accomplished seamstress, a caring mother, PLUS she was my wonderful traveling companion and aunt.
