Fred Pat Royal, 89, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the KC Hospice House, in Kansas City, MO. Visitation 6-8pm Friday, Dec. 22nd at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Independence, 100 N. Pleasant, Independence, MO 64050. Funeral service 11am Saturday, Dec. 23rd at the church with burial following in Mt. Moriah South Cemetery.
Fred was born March 16, 1928 in Kansas City, MO to Pat and Susie Royal. He grew up in Kansas City, MO and graduated from Northeast High School in 1946. After high school, Fred attended the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of Kansas. He started working at Army Map Service in 1956 making military maps, changing to the Air Force with new technology making military charts and retiring with the Department of Defense in 1985. After retirement, Fred continued to share his talent with Gallup Map, making maps of Jackson, Cass, and Clay Counties. He won many awards for his work with the Government.
In 1982, Fred married Ellie Kidd in Independence, MO and they were happily married for 35 years. Fred regularly attend the 1st Presbyterian Church in Independence, MO contributing many hours in time and talents. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, art, airplanes, traveling the US and Europe, being with family and friends and talking on the phone; especially with his longtime friends, Ross and Clarene Cascio.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Jackie “Babe” and Sturge Cumberford. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellie of Independence, MO; his children by his first wife, Vickie (Jerry) Lohman of St. Louis, MO, Fred Royal of Independence, MO, Pat (Susie) Royal of Lee’s Summit, MO and Joseph Royal of Independence, MO; his grandchildren, Tom, Crista, Kelli, Freddie, Stephanie and Danny; his great grandchildren, Lucy, Allison, Cooper, Blake, Landon, Lila, Reese and Mila as well as his nieces and nephews and many relatives and friends.
Fred was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was a true gentleman and known never to have said a bad word about anyone. We will all miss Fred, his smile and his beautiful blue eyes.
